Nonsystematic Rupture Directivity of Geothermal Energy Induced Microseismicity in Helsinki, Finland

چکیده
Abstract The rupture behavior of microseismicity in fluid‐injection settings with low fault stresses is generally believed to be controlled by the pore pressure, including a tendency larger induced earthquakes into perturbed volume toward injection well, implying degree predictability. Here, we examine directivity patterns identify planes and directions 21 largest (local magnitudes, 1.3–1.9) recorded during 2018 St1 Deep Heat geothermal project near Helsinki, Finland. We use Empirical Green's Function technique retrieve per‐seismic‐station corner frequencies, earthquake durations, trends. After combining trends focal mechanisms calculated using principle component analysis, resolve 10 events. In contrast studies events at other sites, find that one event toward, two away, remaining parallel well. Furthermore, prefer mode II failures rather than III. These observations provide new constraints for mechanical models growth pore‐pressure dominated settings.

Geothermal Energy in Finland
The use of geothermal energy in Finland is restricted to the utilization of ground heat with heat pumps. This is due to the geological conditions as Finland is a part of the Fennoscandian (or Baltic) Shield. The bedrock is Precambrian covered with a thin (<5 m) cover of Quaternary sediments. Topography is subdued and does not easily produce advective re-distribution of geothermal heat by ground...

During the 1970s, Barwise and Seligman took the situation-theoretic approach to information and took away much of the technical machinery for handling situations, relations and types, to produce an abstract mathematical account of information flow. Their motivating idea is that information flow is made possible by regularities in systems. Rather than develop machinery for analyzing those regula...

Microseismicity. stress, and fracture in the Coso geothermal field are investigated using seismicity, focal mechanisms and stress analysis. Comparison of hypocenters of microearthquakes with locations of development wells indicates that microseismic activity has increased since the commencement of fluid injection and circulation. Microearthquakes in the geothermal field are proposed as indicato...
متن کاملGeothermal energy
— Geothermal technologies use renewable energy resources to generate electricity and direct use of heat while producing very low levels of greenhousegas (GHG) emissions. Geothermal energy is the thermal energy stored in the underground, including any contained fluid, which is available for extraction and conversion into energy products. Electricity generation, which nowadays produces 73.7TWh (1...
متن کاملGeothermal Energy in Iceland
Due to Iceland’s location on the Mid-Atlantic ridge, the island is provided with a great amount of geothermal energy. Hence, Iceland is well on the way to becoming completely independent of fossil fuels. Whereas high-temperature areas are mainly used for electricity generation, the more frequent low-temperature areas are utilized for direct application like space heating, bathing and greenhouse...
